There ...Yes, these men who were lynched were white. There were a lot of white men lynched in Missouri during the late 1800s, probably more whites than blacks (unlike most of the Deep South States). Missouri was kinda where the Deep South met the Old West. Still, there were many more blacks lynched than whites as a proportion of the population. I'm familiar with some of the notorious incidents in and around Sedalia but probably not all of them. You did not say there race, so I assume they were white. This is very interesting. You need to check out Sedalia Mo.there is some very good history in that town. After I saw your post, I did go back and find a newspaper article from a Windsor (Missouri) newspaper giving the names as W. R. Smith and Dave Triplett, as you say. So, I'll make the correction in the original post. I hope you don't mind if I point out a couple inaccuracies. "Smith" was my 2nd great-grandfather. His name was actually William Riley Smith, not John Smith. He was 30 years old at the time of the lynching (born 1850), not 20. My understanding is the man he was accused of killing was named Dave Triplett, not William, but I am not 100% certain of this.

Thank youAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01454686991692912599noreply@blogger.com
